Yesterday I had a meeting with the manager responsible for Herts County Council’s grass cutting on rural roads (North Herts Council cuts the verges in the towns) to ask why it has taken until late October or even November before many of the rural verges had been cut this year. There are biodiversity benefits in not cutting the grass too soon, but October (let alone November) is far too late for this.
Part of the problem was the amount the grass grew in the very wet summer but the County Council has admitted that there was a problem this year. They have agreed that they will look at making changes to what is cut when next year as a result.
Hopefully that will mean that next year we don’t have to wait until October before cutting is done.
