Conservatives at Herts County Council have voted to go ahead with a plan to increase the cost of young people’s bus saver cards by a third. I proposed freezing the cost of the cards which allow young people up to 18 to travel by bus for half fare but they rejected this.
The County Council says it wants to persuade more people to travel by bus to cut congestion and there is evidence that increasing numbers of young people are looking for alternatives to getting a car as soon as they are old enough to drive. Putting the cost of the Saver Card up by a third will do nothing to encourage this.
The extra £30,000 this will raise is a drop in the ocean compared with the County Council’s £800 million budget so this could easily have been afforded.
